Hello everyone, I'm Zhang Mingyuan. Having been immersed in the jade industry for over thirty years, I have witnessed the ebbs and flows of the jadeite market and accumulated some unique insights into jadeite appraisal and investment. Today, I want to share my latest observations and thoughts on the current jadeite market, hoping to provide valuable references for your collections and investments.

I. Market Trends: From "Jadeite Reigns Supreme" to "Diversified Value"

For a long time, the mainstream aesthetics and investment logic in the jadeite market focused on the ultimate pursuit of "texture, translucency, color, and craftsmanship" (种水色工). Glass-like jadeite, Imperial Green, and high-ice jadeite were undoubtedly hard currency in the market, with their values soaring. However, with the diversification of consumer tastes and increased information transparency, I've noticed subtle changes in the market.

Firstly, there's the rise of "specialty materials." For example, jadeite with unique cotton-like inclusions, floating flowers, or cleverly carved contrasting colors, as long as its overall aesthetic and cultural connotations are prominent enough, has begun to attract more collectors, even if its texture and translucency are not top-tier. I once saw a glutinous-ice jadeite bangle with floating blue flowers, resembling an ink wash landscape, with profound artistic conception. Although its texture and translucency were not as good as high-ice, its unique artistic value fetched a price far exceeding that of similar-grade jadeite at auction. This indicates that the market is shifting from a singular "material attribute" value judgment to a diversified value judgment encompassing "artistic attributes" and "cultural attributes."

Secondly, there's a re-evaluation of "old mine materials." In the past, we often said "old mines produce good material," but with the increasing depletion of mineral resources, truly old mine material is now extremely rare. Many so-called "old mine materials" circulating in the market today are merely marketing gimmicks. However, for "old jadeite" with clear provenance, intact condition, and historical imprints, its historical value and scarcity are being re-evaluated. I advise everyone that when appreciating and investing in such jadeite, in addition to focusing on its inherent jade quality, it's crucial to pay attention to the reliability of its origin, the completeness of its preservation, and the cultural stories it embodies.

II. New Appraisal Thinking: From "Empiricism" to "Scientific Corroboration"

In the field of jadeite appraisal, traditional "eyeball and touch" experience is undoubtedly important. However, with technological advancements and increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting methods, we must introduce more scientific and rigorous appraisal methods.

I have always emphasized that in appraising jadeite, besides relying on our years of accumulated experience, we must also learn to utilize modern scientific methods for assistance. For example, fluorescence spectrometers and infrared spectrometers can help us more accurately determine whether a jadeite is Type A, Type B, Type C, or Type B+C. I once encountered a jadeite bangle that appeared to have excellent texture, translucency, and color, almost flawless to the naked eye. However, infrared spectroscopy revealed organic polymer fillers inside, ultimately confirming it as Type B. This reminds us that when dealing with high-value jadeite, a professional testing report is indispensable.

Furthermore, we need a clearer understanding of "enhanced" jadeite. For example, slight acid washing and waxing are considered acceptable enhancement methods within the industry. As long as they do not alter the jadeite's structure and essence, their impact on value is relatively small. However, excessive acid washing and resin filling can severely damage the jadeite's structure and durability, significantly diminishing its value. Therefore, understanding the degree of different enhancement treatments and their impact on jadeite value is knowledge that every investor and collector needs to master.

III. Investment Strategy: From "Blindly Chasing Highs" to "Value Traps"

In terms of investment, I advise everyone to abandon the mindset of "blindly chasing highs" and instead look for "value traps."

Firstly, focus on mid-to-high-end jadeite. While top-tier jadeite has strong value preservation and appreciation potential, its exorbitant price makes it out of reach for ordinary investors. Low-end jadeite, although inexpensive, has limited appreciation potential. Therefore, I am more optimistic about mid-to-high-end jadeite with glutinous-ice texture or better, vibrant colors, fewer flaws, and exquisite craftsmanship. Such jadeite possesses a certain degree of scarcity and good market liquidity, making it a relatively stable choice for ordinary investors.

Secondly, pay attention to the added value of "themes" and "culture." For example, jadeite with unique auspicious meanings, conforming to zodiac culture, or featuring traditional auspicious patterns, is often more readily accepted by the market. I once collected a jadeite pendant carved with the theme of "Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity." Although its jade quality was not top-tier, its exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful symbolism made it highly sought after in the market.

Finally, establish your own "collection system." Do not blindly follow trends, but rather gradually build your collection system based on your preferences and budget. For example, you can specialize in collecting a specific type of jadeite (such as bangles, pendants) or jadeite with a specific theme (such as Guanyin, Buddha). A systematic collection not only enhances your appraisal skills but also imbues your collection with greater value and storytelling.

Summary and Recommendations:

The jadeite market, like a martial arts world, is ever-changing. As a seasoned jade industry professional, I am well aware of its opportunities and challenges. In the future, I believe the jadeite market will place greater emphasis on the manifestation of diversified value, scientific appraisal methods will become mainstream, and rational investment and systematic collection will be the keys to success.

Here are some recommendations for all collectors and investors:

  • Learning is eternal: Continuously learn about jadeite, and improve your appraisal skills.

  • Practice is fundamental: Observe more, touch more, compare more, and accumulate practical experience.

  • Caution is paramount: For high-value jadeite, always seek assistance from professional appraisal institutions.

  • Independent thinking: Do not blindly believe others; form your own judgments.

  • Enjoy the process: Collecting jadeite is also a cultural inheritance and an enjoyment of beauty.

May everyone find their own brilliance in the dazzling world of jadeite.
