I. Challenges and Innovations in Traditional Appraisal Systems: The Evolving Boundary of "Authenticity" in the Age of Technology

In the past, we often said, "a keen eye is the primary productivity." With a piece of jade in hand, experience and touch alone could roughly determine its clarity (种水), color, and flaws. However, this traditional empiricism is now facing unprecedented challenges.

Firstly, the craftsmanship of B-grade, C-grade, and B+C-grade jade is becoming increasingly sophisticated. High-pressure resin injection and dyeing techniques are constantly improving, and there are even "optimization" methods that are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. I once encountered a bangle that, at first glance, had excellent clarity and color. But upon closer inspection, under a strong flashlight, its internal structure exhibited an unnatural gelatinous feel. Ultimately, spectroscopic analysis confirmed it was a B-grade piece filled with resin. This made me realize that even seasoned experts could be deceived by relying solely on the naked eye.

Therefore, my view is: while building upon traditional appraisal experience, we must actively embrace technology. Professional appraisal institutions equipped with infrared spectrometers, Raman spectrometers, X-ray fluorescence spectrometers, and other instruments can analyze the composition and structure of jade at a molecular level, providing scientific evidence for authenticity. For investors, obtaining an appraisal certificate from an authoritative institution has become a necessary step when purchasing high-value jade. However, a deeper consideration is that we cannot completely rely on instruments. Because instruments can only tell you "yes" or "no," but they cannot tell you "good" or "bad," nor can they evaluate its artistic value and market potential. This is precisely where the value of our seasoned experience lies – on the premise of confirming authenticity, we comprehensively assess the quality, aesthetics, and rarity of the jade.

II. Reconstructing Investment Logic: From "Clarity Supremacy" to "Comprehensive Value Consideration"

In the past, jade investment often followed the principle of "clarity is king," with glass-like (玻璃种), ice-like (冰种), and high-ice-like (高冰种) clarity being the market's focus. However, in recent years, I've observed a shift in this singular investment logic.

A typical example is the rise of "Mo Cui" (black jadeite) and "Qing Shui" (clear water jadeite). A few years ago, Mo Cui began to attract market attention due to its unique characteristic of being dark green to near black, yet translucent green when illuminated. I once acquired several high-quality Mo Cui hand-held pieces at a relatively low price, as its market recognition was not high at the time. However, with the diversification of consumer aesthetics and the exploration of its cultural connotations (e.g., Mo Cui symbolizing wealth and mystery), its price has multiplied several times in just a few years. Similarly, Qing Shui jadeite, with its elegant and refined color, has gradually shed its "dull base" stereotype and become a new favorite in the mid-to-high-end market.

This demonstrates that investing in jade is no longer solely about pursuing extreme clarity but requires a "comprehensive value consideration." My suggestions are:

  • Rarity: Whether it's a top-grade piece with excellent clarity, color, and texture, or a unique piece with distinctive aesthetics, rarity is the fundamental driving force for its value growth.


  • Cultural Connotation: Jade is deeply integrated with Chinese culture, and the auspicious meanings and traditional aesthetics it embodies are important components of its value. For example, the craftsmanship value of exquisitely carved jade ornaments often surpasses the value of the raw material itself.


  • Aesthetic Trends: Market aesthetics are dynamic. Investors need to maintain keen market insight, pay attention to emerging aesthetic preferences, and plan ahead.


  • Craftsmanship Value: A good piece of jade, if it meets a masterful jade carver, will see a qualitative leap in its value. Therefore, when investing, one should also consider whether the carving is exquisite and the design unique.


  • Capital Allocation: For ordinary investors, I recommend not blindly pursuing sky-high prices for top-grade pieces. Instead, focus on mid-to-high-end distinctive jade, such as pendants and hand-held pieces with good clarity, unique colors, and exquisite carving. These categories often offer higher cost-effectiveness and appreciation potential.


III. Market Outlook and Investment Advice

The current jade market presents both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, economic downturn pressure and changing consumption patterns have led to a more rational overall market; on the other hand, high-quality and distinctive jade continues to show strong appreciation momentum.

My summary is: for jade appraisal, "a keen eye" and "technology" are equally important and indispensable; for jade investment, one must move from "single-dimensional" to "multi-dimensional consideration" to seize opportunities.

My advice to investors is:

  • Learning is Fundamental: Observe, learn, and inquire more to enhance your appreciation skills. You can attend professional jade knowledge lectures, read authoritative books, or communicate with experienced experts.


  • Channels are Key: Choose reputable merchants with reliable sources. Do not be greedy for bargains and beware of "treasure hunting" traps.


  • Mindset is Assurance: Jade investment is a long-term investment that requires patience and composure. Do not blindly follow trends, and certainly do not harbor a "get-rich-quick" mentality.


  • Risk Awareness: All investments carry risks. Before committing funds, be sure to assess your risk tolerance.
