Hello everyone, I am Chen Zhigang. Having been involved in the jade industry for over forty years, from an apprentice to now the head of a jade carving studio, I have witnessed countless transformations in jade carving art. Today, I want to discuss the latest developments in jade carving and how we can both uphold tradition and embrace innovation amidst this wave of change.

I. The "New" and "Old" in Jade Carving Art: A Profound Dialogue

Throughout my career, jade carving art has always sought a balance between tradition and innovation. In the past, we emphasized "superb craftsmanship," striving for ultimate artistry and maximizing the natural beauty of the jade. However, with the development of the times, especially the iteration of information technology and aesthetic concepts, jade carving art is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities.

Where does the "new" manifest itself? Firstly, in the diversification of design concepts. In the past, we drew more inspiration from traditional culture and mythical legends. Today, contemporary art, Western aesthetics, and even sci-fi elements are beginning to integrate into jade carving creation. For example, I once mentored a young jade carver who combined cyberpunk-style mechanical elements with the warm texture of Hetian jade, creating a piece called "Eye of the Future." This work sparked considerable debate in the traditional jade carving community but garnered immense attention among young collectors. This demonstrates that with a unique perspective and exquisite craftsmanship, any bold attempt can potentially become a future classic.

Secondly, in the innovation of craftsmanship. The introduction of high-tech methods such as 3D printing and laser engraving offers more possibilities for jade carving. Of course, this does not mean completely replacing hand carving. On the contrary, these technologies primarily serve as auxiliary tools, helping carvers perform precise modeling during the design phase or improve efficiency during the roughing stage. The final refinement and the imparting of spirit still rely on the skilled hands and ingenuity of the jade carver.

And why isn't the "old" an eternal charm? The essence of traditional jade carving lies in the principles of "carving according to the material" and "jade uncarved is no treasure." Each piece of jade has its unique texture, color, and shape. The carver's task is to conform to the natural properties of the jade and excavate its inherent beauty. I once encountered a piece of Hetian jade with natural black spots. Following traditional thinking, one might try every means to remove them. However, one of my apprentices ingeniously designed these spots into a raven poised for flight, forming a stark contrast with the white parts of the jade itself, ultimately creating a profoundly evocative piece called "Ink Feather." This is the best interpretation of the traditional concept of "carving according to the material."

II. Unique Insights: The "Emotional Resonance" and "Social Value" of Jade Carving Art

In my opinion, the future of jade carving art lies not only in the refinement of skills and innovation of forms but also in its ability to create deep "emotional resonance" with viewers and demonstrate its "social value."

Emotional Resonance: A good jade carving work should be able to touch people's hearts. It is not just an exquisite handicraft but should carry the creator's emotions, thoughts, and understanding of the world. I once created a jade carving piece themed "Home," depicting a warm scene of a family of three nestled together on a piece of jasper. This work did not feature elaborate techniques, but it was loved by many for the kinship and warmth it embodied. This made me deeply realize that the vitality of jade carving art lies in its ability to express the most universal human emotions.

Social Value: The social value of jade carving art is reflected in multiple aspects. Firstly, cultural heritage. Jade culture is an important part of Chinese civilization, and jade carving art is a crucial vehicle for inheriting and promoting jade culture. Through jade carving works, we can tell Chinese stories to the world, showcasing the aesthetic tastes and philosophical thoughts of the Chinese nation. Secondly, economic value. The jade carving industry drives a complete industrial chain, from raw material mining, design processing, to sales and collection, providing important support for local economic development and employment. Finally, spiritual value. Jade is known as the "beauty of stones." Wearing jade not only brings aesthetic enjoyment but is also endowed with beautiful meanings such as peace, auspiciousness, and health, becoming a part of people's spiritual sustenance.

III. Future Outlook and Recommendations: Upholding Craftsmanship, Embracing the Future

Looking ahead, jade carving art will continue to explore the balance between tradition and innovation. I believe the following points are crucial:

  • Uphold Craftsmanship and Inherit Skills: Regardless of technological advancements, the essence of hand carving and the spirit of craftsmanship will always be the soul of jade carving art. We should strengthen the training of young jade carvers, enabling them not only to master exquisite skills but also to understand the profound connotations of jade culture.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Integration and Broaden Horizons: Encourage jade carvers to collaborate across disciplines with contemporary artists, designers, and even technologists, drawing inspiration from different fields, breaking traditional mindsets, and creating jade carving works with a stronger contemporary feel and international perspective.

  • Emphasize Originality and Protect Intellectual Property: In today's increasingly competitive market, original design is the core driving force for the development of jade carving art. We must strengthen intellectual property protection, combat plagiarism, and provide a favorable creative environment for originators.

  • Embrace Technology and Enhance Efficiency: Reasonably utilize technologies such as 3D printing and VR/AR to empower jade carving art in design, display, and education, improving creative efficiency and broadening dissemination channels.

  • Tell Good Stories and Enhance Value: Every jade carving work should have a compelling story behind it. By narrating the creative concept of the work, the origin of the jade, and the cultural meanings it embodies, we can enhance the added value and collection value of the pieces.

The path of jade carving art is long and challenging, yet also full of hope and opportunities. As a veteran in the jade industry, I firmly believe that as long as we uphold craftsmanship and bravely innovate, jade carving art will radiate even more brilliantly in the new era, becoming a shining calling card for Chinese culture to the world.

Thank you all.
