Beyond daily handling and cleaning, a suitable storage environment is the cornerstone for the long-term well-being of jade. Today, I'd like to share my years of experience and discuss the ins and outs of jade storage environments.

Scenario Introduction:

I once met a collector who owned a Qing Dynasty jade bracelet, with excellent water clarity, and beautiful texture and color. However, when I saw the bracelet again, I found its luster had significantly dulled, and even some fine cracks had appeared. Upon inquiry, I learned that for convenience, he had placed the bracelet on a windowsill exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, and occasionally took it out to admire, but neglected the importance of the storage environment. This deeply saddened me and strengthened my resolve to share my jade storage experiences with everyone.

Core Techniques: Creating a 'Comfort Zone' for Jade

Jade storage environments revolve around several core elements: temperature, humidity, light, and shock protection. These four points are indispensable and mutually influential.

  • Temperature Control: Jade is most afraid of drastic temperature changes. Too cold or too hot can cause changes in the internal structure of the jade, ranging from affecting its luster to causing cracks. My advice is to store jade in an environment with relatively constant temperature, ideally between 18℃-25℃. Avoid placing jade near air conditioning vents, radiators, or in direct sunlight. I once saw a collector display his jade under spotlights, and prolonged high-temperature exposure led to 'burn marks' on the jade's surface, significantly reducing its value.


  • Humidity Balance: Jade is hydrophilic, and appropriate humidity helps maintain its warm and moist texture. However, excessively high humidity can lead to mold growth, while excessively low humidity may cause the jade to dry out and become dull. A relative humidity of 50%-70% is ideal. In the dry winters of the north, I suggest placing a small cup of water or using a humidifier in the jade storage cabinet, but remember not to let water directly contact the jade. In the humid plum rain season in the south, attention should be paid to moisture prevention, and dehumidifying bags or dehumidifiers can be used.


  • Light Avoidance: Strong ultraviolet rays are the 'invisible killer' of jade. Long-term exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial light can cause changes in the molecular structure of jade, leading to its color fading, luster weakening, and even 'discoloration'. Therefore, jade should be stored in a dark or low-light environment. If display is necessary, choose soft, diffused light and control the display time. My personal practice is to store precious jade in display cabinets with UV protection, or directly in opaque brocade boxes.


  • Shock Protection: Although jade is hard, its toughness is relatively poor, making it highly susceptible to impact damage. Therefore, shock protection measures must be taken during storage. It is recommended to use soft silk, velvet cloth, or specialized jade boxes for wrapping and separation. Avoid stacking multiple jade pieces to prevent them from colliding with each other. Each of my own collections has an independent brocade box, lined with thick velvet, to ensure safety during transportation and storage.


Precautions:

* Keep away from chemicals: Jade should be kept away from perfumes, cosmetics, cleaning agents, and other items containing chemical components, as these chemicals may corrode the jade surface and affect its luster.
* Regular inspection: Even with a good storage environment, it is advisable to regularly take out the jade for inspection, observe its condition, and perform appropriate cleaning and maintenance.
* Separate storage: Different jade pieces have different hardness. To avoid mutual friction and damage, it is best to store them separately.
