Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Zhang, and I've been working in auction houses for over twenty years, handling countless jade pieces. They say jade has a spirit, and it's true. But to truly appreciate and collect a piece of jade well, it's not just about fate; it requires keen eyesight, patience, and an effective strategy. Today, I'm going to break down the experiences I've accumulated over the years and share them with you.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started in this industry, following my master to the market, I saw an old pit glass-type jadeite bangle. Its translucency and color were simply mesmerizing. At that time, I was short on funds and could only watch enviously as others bid for it. From then on, I secretly resolved to master the art of jade collection. Later, with accumulated experience, I had the opportunity to access more exquisite pieces and gradually formed my own collection philosophy. I found that many novice collectors often take detours in jade collection, either blindly following trends or only looking at price without considering value. So, today, from the perspective of an auction house consultant, I want to give you some practical advice.

Core Techniques:

  • “Knowing Jade” is the Foundation, Not “Gambling on Jade”: Many friends enjoy “gambling on rough jade,” finding it exciting. But for collecting, I advocate “knowing jade.” This includes understanding the origin, type, texture, craftsmanship, and historical and cultural background of the jade. For example, Hetian jade emphasizes “white, glutinous, fine, moist, and oily,” while jadeite looks at “type, water, color, and craftsmanship.” I recommend visiting museums, professional exhibitions, reading professional books, and even taking some appraisal courses. I once met a collector who could tell the “past and present” of every piece of jade he collected. Such a collection has more depth and value.

  • “Fewer but Finer” is Better Than “Many but Mixed”: My collection philosophy has always been “rather go without than have something inferior.” Instead of collecting a pile of ordinary jade pieces, it's better to concentrate on finding one or two truly exquisite pieces. Exquisite jade not only has higher artistic and cultural value, but its ability to preserve and increase in value is also stronger. I once acquired a Qing Dynasty white jade carving at a relatively reasonable price at a small auction. Many people thought the price was high at the time, but I valued its exquisite craftsmanship and complete condition. A few years later, its market value had multiplied several times.

  • “Craftsmanship” is the Soul of Jade, Not the Entirety of the “Material”: Many people only look at the jade material itself and ignore the carving. You know, a good piece of jade material, without exquisite carving, is just a stone. And an ordinary piece of jade material, through the skillful hands of a master, can turn decay into magic. When evaluating a jade piece, in addition to the material, I will carefully observe whether the carving lines are smooth, the shape is vivid, and the meaning is profound. For example, a Ming Dynasty jade carving, even if the jade material is not top-notch, its unique historical style and exquisite openwork carving are enough to make it a treasure.

  • Establish Your Own “Collection System”: Don't collect aimlessly; instead, establish a collection system that belongs to you. You can choose to focus on a certain type of jade (such as Hetian jade, jadeite), a certain period (such as Ming and Qing dynasty jade), or a certain theme (such as zodiac animals, Guanyin). This will not only make you an expert in a certain field but also make your collection more systematic and valuable for research. I personally prefer Qing Dynasty scholar's jade pieces because they are not only made of good material and finely carved, but also contain rich scholarly elegance.

Precautions:

* Beware of the “Bargain Hunting” Mentality: There aren't many “bargains” to be found in auction houses; things falling from the sky are rare. Before making a move, be sure to do your homework, verify from multiple sources, and, if necessary, ask a professional to examine it.
* Learn to Distinguish Authenticity: Counterfeit and inferior jade pieces are endless, from dyeing and gluing to B-grade and C-grade goods, with various methods. In addition to observing and learning more, it is more important to choose reputable merchants or auction houses and ask for authoritative appraisal certificates.
* Proper Storage: Although jade is hard, it also needs careful care. Avoid collision with hard objects, clean regularly, and maintain appropriate temperature and humidity. These are key to extending the life of jade.

Experience Summary:
Jade collection is an endless journey. It tests not only your financial resources but also your eyesight, knowledge, and patience. Every piece of jade carries history, culture, and the painstaking efforts of artisans. When we hold them in our hands, what we feel is not just cold stone, but the warmth and profoundness of Chinese civilization. I hope my experiences can inspire you. I wish all collectors can find their own “fate” and “treasure” in the world of jade!
