Today, I'd like to share my insights on choosing and arranging a jade display cabinet, which I affectionately call my 'treasure cabinet.'

I remember when I first started collecting, my jade pieces were casually placed in drawers or wrapped in cloth. While safe, it always felt like something was missing. Until one day, an old senior visited my home, saw my 'hidden' treasures, and smiled, saying, 'Old Li, good jade is like a beautiful woman; hiding it away, isn't that a pity? They should breathe in the sunlight and shine under the lights; that's showing them respect.' These words immediately enlightened me. From then on, I began to ponder how to create a 'home' for my jade that was both safe and beautiful.

Core Techniques: The 'Three Dos' and 'Three Don'ts' of Display Cabinet Selection

One Do: Sturdy Material, Shockproof and Moisture-proof.
Although jade is hard, bumps and knocks are still a major taboo. I personally prefer solid wood or tempered glass display cabinets. Solid wood cabinets are heavy and provide excellent support and cushioning; tempered glass is transparent, aesthetically pleasing, and highly durable. I once used a cheap particleboard cabinet, which deformed and became damp in no time, almost ruining several of my old Hetian jade pieces. So, choosing the right material is crucial; it's the foundation.

Two Do: Good Sealing, Dustproof and Anti-oxidation.
Dust and moisture in the air are invisible killers of jade. A well-sealed display cabinet can effectively isolate these external harms. My display cabinets all have rubber sealing strips. Although they cost a bit more, they significantly reduce cleaning frequency and better protect the luster of the jade. Especially for intricately carved or openwork jade pieces, dust prevention is paramount.

Three Do: Appropriate Lighting to Highlight Beauty.
Lighting is the 'makeup artist' for jade. Excessive direct light can make jade appear dry, and long-term exposure may even lead to changes in the jade's quality. I usually choose LED spotlights with a color temperature of 3000K-4000K, which provide soft light and don't generate heat. My experience is to install a set of spotlights on both the top and sides of the cabinet to create cross-illumination. This better showcases the warmth of the jade and the layers of its carving. I remember once, I placed a white jade pebble under strong light, and it appeared white and dry, losing its 'mutton fat' warmth. After adjusting the lighting, it regained its rightful charm.

Three Don'ts:

* Don't choose open or semi-open cabinets: Unless your home is spotless, dust will drive you crazy, and items are easily knocked over.
* Don't choose areas with direct sunlight: UV rays have potential damage to jade. Long-term exposure can cause jade to lose water and even change color. My display cabinets are all away from windows or protected by blackout curtains.
* Don't choose damp areas or places with large temperature fluctuations: Areas near kitchens and bathrooms are absolute no-gos. Large temperature differences can cause cabinet deformation and may also affect the internal structure of the jade.

  • Plan the Space: Before purchasing a display cabinet, measure the dimensions of the placement area and leave enough space for daily cleaning and access. I once bought a cabinet without accurately measuring the space, and it didn't fit, forcing me to return it and waste time and effort.

  • Internal Layout: Inside the cabinet, you can set up shelves of different heights based on the size and type of jade. Small trinkets and pendants can be placed on the upper layers for easy viewing; larger擺件 (display pieces) and hand-held pieces can be placed on the lower layers for stability. I also use custom velvet trays or small stands to give each jade piece its 'exclusive spot,' which prevents mutual friction and enhances overall aesthetics.

  • Shock Protection: Place a thin layer of non-slip mat or velvet cloth at the bottom of the cabinet or on the shelves to effectively prevent jade from sliding and bumping. I once had a Qing dynasty jade plaque that accidentally slipped due to cabinet shaking. Fortunately, the velvet cloth cushioned it, preventing damage, which was a real scare.

  • Regular Cleaning: Even with good sealing, it's necessary to regularly wipe the inside and outside of the cabinet with a soft, dry cloth to keep it clean. The jade itself can also be gently wiped with purified water and a soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
