  • Prioritize 'Spinach Green' and 'Apple Green': The color of Bi Yu is the core of its value. The universally recognized best colors are the rich 'spinach green,' followed by the vibrant 'apple green.' Bi Yu of these two colors has very high visual appeal and market recognition. My personal experience is that the more uniform and pure the color, the higher the value. Avoid choosing colors that are grayish, blackish, or have obvious color differences.


  • Look at the Jade Quality, Aim for 'Fine, Waxy, Oily, and Moist': The jade quality is the 'skeleton' of Bi Yu. Good Bi Yu will appear very fine to the naked eye, with a compact structure, and feel warm and oily to the touch. In industry jargon, it's 'fine, waxy, oily, and moist.' Avoid choosing those with rough texture, granular feel, too much 'water' (making it feel light), or dry and dull. My little trick is to use a flashlight from the side in natural light to observe the fineness of the jade and check for impurities or cracks.


  • Consider the Origin, but Don't Be 'Origin-Obsessed': Xinjiang Manasi Bi Yu, Russian Bi Yu, Canadian Bi Yu, Qinghai Bi Yu... there are many origins. Currently, the most highly valued in the market are Xinjiang Manasi Bi Yu and high-quality old mine material from Russian Bi Yu. But please note, not all Russian Bi Yu is good, and not all Manasi Bi Yu is perfect. The key is still the jade quality itself. I've seen Canadian Bi Yu of excellent quality whose value even surpasses some ordinary Russian Bi Yu. So, origin can be a reference, but the jade quality is more important!


  • Carving and Form: If it's a carved piece, the intricacy and artistry of the carving will greatly enhance its value. For plain pieces like bracelets or bead strings, the regularity and completeness of the form are more emphasized. The size, thickness, and absence of cracks in a bracelet all need careful consideration.


Pitfall Avoidance Guide ⚠️

* Beware of Dyed and Treated Jade: There is some Bi Yu on the market that has been dyed, glued, or otherwise treated. These are cheap but have no collection value. Always choose natural, untreated pieces.
* Don't Blindly Chase 'White Spots': 'Black spots' and 'white spots' (stone flowers) are common in Bi Yu. 'Black spots' are chromite; a small amount doesn't affect aesthetics and can even prove its naturalness. 'White spots' are tremolite particles; too many will affect the fineness of the jade. However, some merchants promote 'white spots' as a sign of high jadeification, which is misleading. A moderate amount of black spots is acceptable, but too many white spots should be viewed with caution.
* Observe, Learn, and Compare More: For beginners, it's essential to visit professional jade markets and exhibitions, consult experienced experts, and compare Bi Yu of different qualities and prices to improve your appreciation skills.
