Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Wang, and I've been involved with jade for decades. From my initial ignorance to my current obsession, jade has become an integral part of my life. Today, I want to discuss a particularly important topic in jade collection: moisture and sun protection. These eight words may seem simple, but there's a lot of knowledge behind them. A slight oversight can cause your beloved treasures to lose their luster or even suffer irreversible damage.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember that year, I had just acquired a piece of Hetian jade seed material. Its oily texture and warm color made me fondle it endlessly. At that time, I was young and impetuous, thinking that the more I played with jade, the better it would be, so I casually placed it on my desk near the window. As a result, after just one summer, some faint "water lines" appeared on the surface of the seed material, and it felt less oily. It broke my heart! Later, I consulted an old expert, who took one look and said, "Brother, this is sun damage!" From then on, I truly began to pay attention to the storage environment for jade.

Core Techniques: Moisture and Sun Protection, Dual Approach

  • Sun Protection: Keep Away from Direct Sunlight, Avoid Strong Light Exposure

* Principle: The high energy of ultraviolet and infrared rays in sunlight accelerates the evaporation of moisture within the jade, leading to dehydration, dryness, and even tiny cracks. Especially jade types containing more water, such as jadeite and water-moss jade, are more sensitive to sunlight.
* Operational Suggestions:
* Choose Storage Location: Never place jade in direct sunlight, such as on windowsills or balconies. Even indoors, avoid prolonged exposure to strong lights, such as spotlights. My experience is that the shaded areas of bookshelves, display cabinets, or specialized collection cabinets are the best choices.
* Display Cabinet Selection: If using a display cabinet, it's best to choose one with UV-protective glass, or apply a UV-protective film to the inside of the glass. I have several custom-made display cabinets at home, and the glass is specially treated. Although the cost is higher, it better protects my treasures.
* Daily Shading: For jade pieces that are not frequently handled, I wrap them in soft silk or flannel cloth, place them in a brocade box, and then put them in a cabinet. This not only prevents dust but also effectively blocks light.

  • Moisture Protection: Maintain Appropriate Humidity, Avoid Extreme Environments

* Principle: Although jade is hard, its internal structure is not completely dense, and there are tiny pores. Excessive humidity can cause dust and dirt to adhere to the jade surface, and even lead to mold growth; while excessively low humidity will accelerate the loss of moisture within the jade, making it dry.
* Operational Suggestions:
* Constant Humidity Environment: The ideal storage environment is constant temperature and humidity. For us ordinary collectors, it's difficult to achieve professional constant temperature and humidity cabinets. However, we can try to choose indoor areas with relatively stable humidity, avoiding damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms, and also avoiding overly dry areas like air conditioner vents.
* Dry Northern Regions: If you are in the north, and indoor heating in winter leads to very dry air, you can consider placing a humidifier in the room where you store jade, controlling the humidity between 50%-70%. But remember, do not let the humidifier blow directly onto the jade.
* Humid Southern Regions: In the south, the plum rain season brings high humidity. At this time, you can consider placing some desiccant (such as silica gel granules) in the collection cabinet, but remember to regularly check and replace it to prevent the desiccant from becoming saturated and ineffective. I personally prefer using electronic dehumidifying boxes, which can precisely control humidity and are much more hassle-free.
* Avoid Contact with Chemicals: In humid environments, jade is more susceptible to chemical erosion. Therefore, keep jade away from perfumes, cosmetics, cleaning agents, etc.

Precautions:

* Regular Inspection: Regardless of the protective measures you take, regular inspection of the jade's condition is essential. I usually take out all my jade pieces every one or two months, gently wipe them with a clean, soft cotton cloth, and observe if there are any abnormalities.
* Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes: Extreme temperature changes can cause changes in the internal structure of jade, and even lead to cracks. Therefore, do not bring jade directly from a cold outdoor environment into a warm indoor environment, or vice versa.
* Keep Clean: Before storage, be sure to clean the surface of the jade to prevent dust and dirt from adhering in humid environments, making them difficult to clean.

Experience Summary:

Jade collection is one-third about discernment and seven-tenths about maintenance. Moisture and sun protection are the most basic and crucial aspects of jade maintenance. It's not just about maintaining the surface luster of the jade, but also about preserving the stability and integrity of its internal structure. Every piece of jade is a gift from nature, carrying unique stories and energy. As collectors, we have the responsibility and obligation to preserve their beauty for a long time in the most appropriate way. I hope my small experiences can be helpful to everyone. I wish all jade enthusiasts can cultivate their favorite "living jade"!
