Hello, my treasure girls! I'm your jewelry investment consultant, Xiaoya, and today I want to talk about a hot topic recently—AI jade appraisal! 🤖💎
Have you been bombarded by various AI appraisal apps and mini-programs lately? Things like "results in one second" and "expert-level accuracy" sound like a godsend for jade newbies, right? But as an old hand who has been in the jade industry for over a decade, having seen more genuine and fake jade than I've eaten rice, I have to step forward and share my real experience and some in-depth thoughts.
My First AI Appraisal Experience: A Mix of Surprise and Confusion
Some time ago, I was also bursting with curiosity and downloaded several supposedly powerful AI appraisal apps. I specifically chose a Hetian jade pebble handle piece that I've collected for many years (sisters who know their stuff know that the skin color, pores, and oiliness of pebble jade are difficult points for appraisal), a jadeite A-grade bracelet given by a friend, and a common B+C grade jadeite bracelet from the market (to test AI's ability to identify fakes).
The test results were surprising, yet expected:
- Hetian Jade Pebble: The appraisal results from several apps varied widely. Some simply displayed "Hetian jade," while others went further, giving descriptions like "Hetian jade pebble, good oiliness, natural skin color." However, for the most crucial feature of pebble jade, the "pores," AI's recognition ability was clearly insufficient, and some apps even completely ignored it. What made me laugh and cry was that one app even gave a risk warning of "possibly dyed quartzite"! 😱 This treasure I bought with a lot of money was almost "sentenced to death" by AI.
- Jadeite A-grade Bracelet: Most apps could accurately identify it as "natural jadeite A-grade" and gave basic judgments on its type, water clarity, and color. AI performed quite stably in this regard.
- B+C grade Jadeite Bracelet: To my relief, all apps identified it as "treated jadeite" or "B+C grade," and warned of signs of dyeing, filling, and other treatments. It seems that AI has some ability to identify such obvious fakes.
Where is AI jade appraisal reliable? And what are its limitations?
Advantages:
* Entry-level identification: For novices, AI can quickly filter out some obvious fakes, such as glass, plastic imitations, or B+C grade jadeite with very obvious treatment marks. This is helpful for initial screening and avoiding major pitfalls. 👍
* Convenience: Anytime, anywhere, you can take a picture with your phone, providing convenience when professional instruments and appraisers are not available.
* Knowledge popularization: Some apps provide jade popular science knowledge below the appraisal results, which positively contributes to improving everyone's cognitive level.
Limitations:
* Lack of in-depth appraisal: Jade appraisal, especially for high-grade jade, often requires a combination of visual observation, touch, tapping sound, and even professional instrument testing (such as infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy) and other multi-dimensional information. AI currently mainly relies on image recognition, and its ability to identify internal structures, subtle flaws, oiliness, and aged feel of jade, which are often considered "metaphysical" aspects, is very limited. For example, AI struggles to accurately capture the "pores" feature of Hetian jade.
* Experience and knowledge base limitations: AI's appraisal results are based on its learned database. If the database does not contain enough high-quality, multi-angle real cases, or contains erroneous samples, then AI's judgment will be biased. The variety of jade, with its complex characteristics, requires an extremely large and constantly updated database to support it.
* Cannot replace human eyes and experience: True jade appraisal, in addition to scientific data, is inseparable from the appraiser's accumulated experience over many years and their "insight" into jade. The warm and oily feel of a good Hetian jade, the lively and gelatinous feel of a good jadeite, these are things that AI currently cannot perceive. 👩🎓
* Significant impact of light and angle: The same piece of jade can appear very different in color and texture under different lighting and shooting angles, which can severely interfere with AI's judgment.
My Professional Advice: AI appraisal can be an aid, but never blindly trust it!
- As a preliminary screening tool: If you have no concept of a piece of jade, or want to quickly rule out some low-grade fakes, AI appraisal can be your first line of defense. 🚨
- Combine multiple sources of information: Don't just look at AI's results. Combine it with merchant reputation, certificates, price, as well as your own visual observation and touch. Ask more questions, learn more, and see more—that's the way to go.
- For important transactions, always send for inspection: For high-value jade, especially jadeite, Hetian jade, etc., be sure to send it to a national authoritative testing institution (such as GIA, NGTC, CGL, etc.) for an appraisal certificate. This is the most reliable guarantee. 🧾
- Improve your own appreciation ability: Learn about jade, handle more genuine pieces, and cultivate your own eye and touch. This is the ultimate way to avoid being scammed. Follow my Xiaohongshu, and I will continue to share more useful tips! 😉
Summary:
AI jade appraisal is a manifestation of technological progress. It brings us convenience and injects new vitality into the jade industry. However, it is currently still in the "auxiliary tool" stage and is far from being able to completely replace manual appraisal. For us jade lovers, staying rational, making good use of tools, and continuously improving our professional knowledge are the correct ways to navigate the world of jade!
