Hey sisters! I'm your old friend Xiao Wang, a 'jade fanatic' who has been in the jade industry for over a decade, with a house full of various treasures 😂.
Recently, I've noticed that the topic of 'AI jade appraisal' is very popular on Xiaohongshu, and many sisters are asking: Is this high-tech really reliable? Can it replace manual appraisal? Today, I'm going to reveal my personal experience of trying AI jade appraisal, hoping to give you some references and inspiration!
💡 Why did I try AI appraisal?
To be honest, as a seasoned player, I have always had a soft spot for traditional manual appraisal. After all, the charm of jade lies not only in its physical properties but also in the culture, history, and craftsmanship behind it. However, with the rapid development of technology, AI has shown amazing capabilities in many fields, which made me curious: Can AI get a share in the field of jade appraisal, which heavily relies on experience and sensibility?
Coincidentally, I have an ancestral old jade bracelet, which is very old, but the specific origin and quality have not been definitively determined. So, I decided to use it to 'test' the AI appraisal system.
🤖 My First AI Appraisal Experience: Surprises and Limitations Coexist
I chose an AI appraisal App that has a good reputation in the industry. The operation was very simple. I took photos of the bracelet from multiple angles as prompted, including transmitted light photos, natural light photos, and detailed close-ups, then uploaded them and waited for the result.
Surprises:
- Super fast! 🚀 In just a few minutes, I received the appraisal report. This efficiency is unmatched by manual appraisal, which can take days or even longer to find an experienced appraiser and wait.
- Detailed data analysis. 📊 The report not only listed the mineral composition of the jade (such as jadeite, albite, etc.) but also provided estimated values for physical parameters such as density and refractive index. These data are undoubtedly a good helper for beginners to understand basic jade knowledge.
- High accuracy of initial judgment. For some obvious A-grade and B-grade jade, AI's judgment was basically accurate. For example, for my jade bracelet, AI clearly gave the conclusion of 'natural jadeite A-grade', which is consistent with my years of experience.
Obvious limitations:
- Lack of in-depth judgment on 'quality' and 'color'. 💧 My old jade bracelet has fine quality and warm base color, but the AI report's description of 'quality' and 'color' was very general, only basic descriptions like 'glutinous type' and 'light green', which could not reflect its unique charm and value. This is precisely what is most valued in manual appraisal and best reflects the appraiser's skill.
- Inability to identify special craftsmanship and historical value. 🕰️ My bracelet has some unique carving techniques and traces of time, which are important bases for judging its historical and collection value in manual appraisal, but the AI report did not mention them at all.
- Need to improve the identification of optimization treatments. Although AI can identify B-grade jade, its ability to identify some high-imitation C-grade and D-grade jade, or some hidden optimization treatments (such as micro-filling), still needs to be improved. I specifically tested it with a jade pendant with slight glue injection, and AI actually gave the conclusion of 'natural jadeite', which made me a little worried.
🤔 Who is AI appraisal suitable for?
After this experience, I summarized:
* Beginner players: If you are new to jade and don't know much about basic knowledge, AI appraisal can be a preliminary screening tool to help you quickly rule out some obvious fakes and understand the basic properties of jade. But remember, don't rely entirely on it to judge value.
* Daily small items, batch preliminary screening: For some low-value daily small items that need quick appraisal, or when merchants conduct preliminary screening of a large batch of goods, AI appraisal can greatly improve efficiency.
* Auxiliary tool, not a substitute: For seasoned players and high-value collections, AI appraisal can only be used as an auxiliary tool, and the final judgment still needs to be combined with manual appraisal, especially by an experienced and qualified appraiser for physical appraisal.
🌟 My Personal Advice
- Don't blindly trust AI results. 🤖 Technology is advancing, but jade appraisal is an empirical science and art, and AI cannot fully simulate human senses and experience yet. For high-value jade, be sure to obtain a certificate from an authoritative institution.
- Learn more about jade. 📚 Whether it's AI appraisal or manual appraisal, the ultimate judgment comes from your own knowledge. Read more books, communicate more, and get more hands-on experience to improve your discernment.
- Combine multiple appraisal methods. 💡 If conditions permit, you can use AI for preliminary judgment first, and then combine it with manual appraisal, which can minimize risks.
AI appraisal is a future trend, and it will undoubtedly bring changes to the jade industry. But at least for now, it cannot completely replace the position of manual appraisal. The charm of jade lies in its 'life' and 'spirit', which requires us to observe with our eyes and feel with our hearts. 💖
