Hi sisters! 👋 I'm Xiaoya, your jewelry investment consultant. I've been in the jade industry for over a decade, witnessing countless beautiful jades change hands and experiencing many pitfalls. Recently, many friends have been asking me: Xiaoya, many apps now have AI appraisal functions, claiming to identify the authenticity of jade. Is this reliable? 🤔
To be honest, I was initially skeptical about AI appraisal. After all, jade appraisal is a profound subject, requiring experience, keen eyesight, instruments, and even a bit of 'mysticism.' But curiosity, coupled with my professional habit, drove me to personally try out several popular AI appraisal apps on the market. Today, I'm going to reveal my true feelings and professional analysis to you!
My AI Appraisal 'Guinea Pig' Experiment 🧪
I prepared three representative pieces of jade:
- Grade A Jadeite Bangle (Ice-kind with floating flowers, market price around 50,000 RMB): This is what I wear daily, with an authoritative certificate, and excellent quality.
- Grade B+C Jadeite Pendant (Glued and dyed, market price around 2,000 RMB): This is a fake I specifically bought for teaching purposes, with obvious characteristics.
- Hetian Jade Seed Material Rough (Mature skin, market price around 10,000 RMB): Uncarved, with natural skin color and pores.
I used three different AI appraisal apps to photograph and identify these three pieces of jade. The results, well, some were happy, some were sad! 😅
AI Appraisal Results Revealed! 😱
* For the Grade A Jadeite Bangle: Most apps could identify it as jadeite, but their judgment on the kind, color, and value was vague. Some would prompt 'natural jadeite,' some would give 'ice-kind,' but for detailed features like 'floating flowers,' AI seemed powerless. As for valuation, it varied wildly, from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands, completely unreliable! ❌
* For the Grade B+C Jadeite Pendant: To my surprise, two apps actually identified 'optimized treatment' or 'dyeing'! 👏 This indicates that AI has some ability to identify obvious treatment features. However, some apps directly judged it as 'natural jadeite,' which is misleading! ⚠️
* For the Hetian Jade Seed Material Rough: This was AI's 'disaster area'! Almost all apps failed to accurately identify it as Hetian jade seed material; some even identified it as 'marble' or 'quartzite'! 🤦♀️ For rough jade, which is unpolished and has complex surface features, AI's image recognition capability is clearly far from enough.
My Professional Analysis: What Can AI Appraisal Really Do? 🤔
After this hands-on test, I summarized a few points:
- Pros: Preliminary screening, identifying obvious fakes. For some visible and obviously fake items (like the dyeing and gluing of B+C jadeite), AI can indeed provide some warnings through image recognition and big data comparison. For novices, this can help avoid buying low-grade fakes that are easily spotted. 👍
- Limitations: Cannot replace professional appraisal. AI currently cannot delve into the internal structure, mineral composition, coloring reasons, and other professional aspects of jade. For key factors affecting value such as the kind, cracks, flaws, craftsmanship, and origin of jade, AI is even more powerless. Especially for details like the skin color, pores, and oiliness of Hetian jade, AI's recognition ability is almost zero. ❌
- Strong data dependency: The accuracy of AI appraisal highly depends on the richness and accuracy of its database. If the database does not contain enough high-quality samples, or if the samples are incorrectly labeled, the appraisal results will be greatly compromised.
- Easily affected by light and angle: The light, angle, and clarity of the photograph will greatly affect AI's judgment. A blurry or poorly lit photo is very likely to lead AI to an incorrect conclusion.
Practical Advice for Jade Enthusiasts: 💡
* AI appraisal can be used as an auxiliary tool, but never as the ultimate basis! Treat it as a preliminary 'mine detector.'
* When purchasing high-value jade, be sure to ask for an appraisal certificate issued by an authoritative institution! Such as the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC) or the Gemological Testing Center of China University of Geosciences.
* Look more, learn more, and handle more! Improving your own appreciation ability is key. Participate in more jade exhibitions and lectures, and communicate more with experienced collectors.
* Find reliable merchants and professionals! Trust is the most important cornerstone in jade transactions.
Sisters, the world of jade is profound and fascinating, and the advancement of AI technology has also brought us much convenience. But for now, AI appraisal is still in its early stages of development, and there's a long way to go before it can truly replace human professional appraisal. So, while enjoying the convenience of technology, everyone should also remain clear-headed and cautious! 💖
