Hey sisters, the buzz around AI gemstone appraisal has been huge lately! 🔥 As a seasoned appraiser who's been immersed in the jadeite industry for over a decade, I've always been curious about this emerging technology, but also harbored a professional skepticism. After all, the charm of gemstones lies in their unique natural textures, warm touch, and rich cultural heritage – can cold machines truly understand these nuances? 🤔

Recently, I couldn't resist any longer and decided to personally test a few popular AI appraisal apps on some of my treasured pieces! 🌟 Want to know the results? Keep reading, you'll find unexpected insights!

My 'Experiment Subjects':

  • Icy-type Floating Flower Jadeite Bangle: Grade A, excellent clarity and texture, vibrant floating flowers, market value around 100,000 RMB. This is my daily wear favorite, and a recognized 'standard piece' among appraisers.

  • Glutinous-type Oily Green Jadeite Pendant: Grade A, stable color, fine texture, market value around 8,000 RMB. A relatively common entry-level jadeite.

  • Grade B+C Jadeite Bangle (Dyed + Glued): This is a sample I use for teaching, with very obvious characteristics, easily distinguishable by eye. Market value is essentially zero, and it can even be harmful to health.

  • Natural Hetian Jade Seed Material (Mutton Fat Jade): Warm and lustrous texture, rich oiliness, market value around 50,000 RMB. Although not jadeite, it's an important member of the gemstone family, and I wanted to see AI's recognition ability for different jade types.

Initial AI Appraisal App Experience:

I chose three AI appraisal apps that are highly praised on Xiaohongshu. The operation process was largely similar: upload multi-angle photos, fill in basic information (such as origin, size, etc.), and then wait for the results.

Results Revealed! 😱

* Icy-type Floating Flower Jadeite Bangle (Grade A):
* App 1: Appraisal result was 'Natural Jadeite Grade A', with descriptions like 'icy-type', 'floating flower', and even estimated a price range (90,000-110,000 RMB). Accuracy rate up to 95%! 👍
* App 2: Also appraised as 'Natural Jadeite Grade A', but the description of clarity and texture was slightly vague, and the price estimate was lower (70,000-90,000 RMB).
* App 3: The result was 'Natural Gemstone', without specifically identifying it as jadeite, nor providing clarity, texture, or price. A bit perfunctory.

* Glutinous-type Oily Green Jadeite Pendant (Grade A):
* App 1: Appraised as 'Natural Jadeite Grade A', with clarity and texture described as 'glutinous-type' and color as 'oily green'. The price estimate was also quite reasonable (7,000-9,000 RMB).
* App 2: Appraised as 'Natural Jadeite', but did not specify Grade A, and the descriptions of clarity, texture, and color were quite general.
* App 3: The result was still 'Natural Gemstone'. It seems this app has limited ability to identify specific categories.

* Grade B+C Jadeite Bangle (Dyed + Glued):
* App 1: 🚨Key point! It actually identified it as 'Treated Jadeite' and warned 'May have undergone dyeing or gluing treatment, not recommended for purchase'! Although it didn't directly state B+C, it was very close! I was truly astonished!
* App 2: Warned 'Suspected treated jadeite', recommending offline re-examination. It also showed some awareness.
* App 3: Still 'Natural Gemstone'... I was speechless.

* Natural Hetian Jade Seed Material (Mutton Fat Jade):
* App 1: Identified as 'Natural Hetian Jade', with descriptions like 'seed material', 'mutton fat jade', and even mentioned 'good oiliness'. The price estimate was also quite reliable (45,000-55,000 RMB).
* App 2: Identified as 'Natural Hetian Jade', but did not differentiate between seed material and mutton fat jade.
* App 3: Still 'Natural Gemstone'.

My Professional Interpretation and Advice:

From this experience, it's clear that AI gemstone appraisal, especially for jadeite, has made surprising progress! 👏

  • AI performs well in basic appraisal: For identifying Grade A jadeite and warning about treated jadeite, some leading apps have done very well. This undoubtedly provides a preliminary screening tool for novice jade enthusiasts, effectively avoiding some obvious pitfalls.

  • Subtle judgments remain an human advantage: For example, subtle characteristics of jadeite like 'oldness of the type', 'fluorescence', 'gel-like feel', and characteristics of Hetian jade like 'authenticity of skin color', 'pore features' – these require rich experience and the human eye's ultimate perception of light and texture to accurately judge. AI cannot fully replace this yet.

  • Price estimates are for reference only: The price of gemstones is influenced by too many factors, such as carving, symbolism, market conditions, and even the seller's mood! 😂 AI's price estimates can only serve as a general reference and should not be taken as the final transaction basis.

  • AI appraisal is an aid, not a replacement: I believe AI appraisal is more like a 'pre-inspector' or 'smart assistant'. It can help you quickly rule out most fakes and inferior products, but the final purchasing decision and value judgment still require combining the opinions of professional appraisers, or learning more and viewing more physical objects yourself.

Practical Advice for Jade Enthusiasts:

* Newcomers can try AI assistance: If you're a beginner and know nothing about gemstones, you can first use an AI App to get a preliminary judgment on the gemstone you want to buy, ruling out those obvious fakes. But remember, don't rely entirely on it!
* For important collectibles, always seek professional appraisal: For high-value jadeite, Hetian jade, etc., be sure to obtain a certificate from an authoritative appraisal institution or have an experienced appraiser physically examine it. This is the safest approach!
* Learn more, see more, handle more: Improving your own discernment is key! Visit more markets, see more genuine articles, and communicate more with experts. Over time, you'll also develop a 'sharp eye'! 👀

In conclusion, AI gemstone appraisal is a future trend, constantly evolving and bringing us convenience. But the charm of gemstones, beyond scientific data, lies more in the human emotions and historical sedimentation they carry. This unique 'warmth' is something AI can never fully replace. 💖
