Hey sisters, it's your jade lifestyle aesthetics blogger, Xiao Ya! Recently, many friends have been asking me a question: are the numerous AI jade appraisal mini-programs and apps on the market reliable? 🤔 As an experienced jade enthusiast with over ten years in the industry, I decided to personally test them out and use my professional knowledge and experience to reveal the true face of AI jade appraisal!

💡 What is the principle behind AI jade appraisal?

First, we need to understand the underlying logic of these AI appraisal tools. They are usually based on big data image recognition technology and deep learning algorithms. Simply put, they train AI models to identify characteristics such as color, texture, structure, luster, and transparency of jade by processing a vast amount of jade images (including genuine articles, imitations, and enhanced pieces). When a user uploads a jade photo, the AI compares this photo with the data in its database to provide an appraisal result. Sounds very advanced, doesn't it? ✨

🔍 My AI Appraisal Hands-On Experience

For this review, I specifically prepared three representative jade pieces:

  • Piece A: A Hetian jade pebble hand-piece that I have treasured for many years, with a lustrous skin, delicate texture, natural pores, and scattered gold spots, a typical genuine article.

  • Piece B: A common high-imitation Grade A jadeite bangle on the market, with vibrant color and excellent clarity, but upon closer inspection, one can find loose structure and acid corrosion marks.

  • Piece C: A dyed quartzite, masquerading as jadeite, with color floating on the surface and a rough structure.

I used an app that claims to be an “AI Jade Appraisal Expert” to appraise these three pieces. The results were somewhat surprising, yet within expectations.

* For Piece A (Hetian jade pebble): The AI result was “Hetian jade, high probability of being genuine.” ✅ It also analyzed characteristics such as skin color and oiliness. This result is quite accurate, as the features of Hetian jade pebbles are relatively distinct.
* For Piece B (high-imitation Grade A jadeite): The AI's appraisal result was “Jadeite, natural Grade A.” ❌ This is quite alarming! Although it also mentioned “attention to structural details,” the overall judgment as Grade A is highly misleading for novices! It's important to know that this high-imitation bangle, to the naked eye, can be spotted by anyone with some experience, let alone professional instrument appraisal.
* For Piece C (dyed quartzite): The AI result was “Quartzite, dyed treatment.” ✅ This result was correct. Perhaps because the characteristics of dyed quartzite differ significantly from natural jadeite, it was easier for the AI to identify.

🧐 Pros and Cons of AI Jade Appraisal

Pros:

* Convenience: Anytime, anywhere, just take a photo with your phone for appraisal, saving the trouble of going to appraisal institutions.
* Low cost: Most AI appraisal tools are free or inexpensive.
* Preliminary screening: For some obvious fakes or enhanced pieces, AI can indeed perform preliminary identification.

Cons:

* Limitations: AI primarily relies on image recognition and cannot perceive the internal structure, density, refractive index, and other physical optical parameters of jade, which are crucial for professional appraisal.
* High misjudgment rate: For high-imitation products and cleverly enhanced jade, AI has a higher misjudgment rate, especially the jadeite in my test (Piece B), which was very misleading!
* Lack of professional interpretation: AI can only give a result, but cannot provide in-depth interpretation like a professional appraiser, considering the origin, cultural background, and market value of the jade.
* Influence of light and angle: The lighting, angle, and clarity of the photo will significantly affect AI's judgment.

💡 My Professional Advice

Sisters, listen to my advice: AI appraisal can be a tool for your initial understanding of jade, but it should never be used as the final basis for appraisal! 🙅‍♀️ Especially when it comes to high-value jade, such as jadeite or Hetian jade worth hundreds of thousands or millions, never blindly trust AI's judgment!

The correct approach is:

  • Learn and observe more: Enhance your knowledge of jade and visit physical stores to experience genuine articles firsthand.

  • Choose reputable channels: When purchasing jade, always choose reputable merchants and ask for authoritative appraisal certificates (e.g., national inspection, provincial inspection, China University of Geosciences, etc.).

  • Professional appraisal: For questionable jade or high-value collectibles, be sure to send them to a state-recognized professional jewelry and jade appraisal institution for appraisal. They have professional instruments and experienced appraisers who can provide the most accurate and authoritative conclusions.

Remember, the charm of jade lies in its naturalness, rarity, and cultural heritage, which AI currently cannot fully understand and judge. I hope my hands-on test can help you avoid pitfalls on your jade journey! 💖
