Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Xiaoya, your jade culture ambassador. ✨ Recently, AI technology has been booming, and even the field of jade appraisal has started to 'roll up its sleeves'! Various AI appraisal apps are emerging, claiming to provide instant results with super high accuracy. Well, with my overflowing curiosity, I decided to be a 'guinea pig' myself and test the true capabilities of three popular AI appraisal apps on the market! 🤔
My 'Experiment Subjects':
To ensure fairness, I deliberately selected three pieces of jade of different qualities and types:
- Hotan Jade Seed Material Bracelet: A old seed material bracelet I've cherished for years, with typical oiliness, density, and skin color, easily recognized as genuine by experts. 💰
- Emerald A-grade Pendant: A piece of ice-type emerald with excellent clarity, water, and color, accompanied by an authoritative appraisal certificate, definitely A-grade.
- Quartzite Jade Bracelet (masquerading as emerald): This is a 'high imitation' I specifically found, similar in appearance to emerald, but essentially quartzite, a common imitation of B+C grade goods. 🔍
My 'Appraisal Tools':
I chose three AI appraisal apps with high download volumes and relatively good reviews in the App Store and Android app stores (to avoid advertising, I won't name them here, you know what I mean 😉). They generally claim to have massive databases and deep learning algorithms, capable of identifying jade material, origin, authenticity, etc.
Actual Test Process and Results Revealed!
App 1: 'Jade Assistant'
* Operation Experience: Upload photos, wait about 30 seconds for results. The interface is simple and operation is smooth.
* Hotan Jade Seed Material: The result showed 'Hotan jade, genuine, origin Xinjiang'. ✅ It described characteristics like fine texture and good oiliness, and also provided a market reference price range (slightly lower than the actual value, but in the right direction).
* Emerald A-grade: The result showed 'Emerald A-grade, ice-type, positive green'. ✅ Accurately identified the type, water, and color, and gave an evaluation of 'has collection value'.
* Quartzite Jade: The result showed 'Emerald B+C grade, recommended for inspection'. ⚠️ Although it didn't directly point out it was quartzite, the prompt for B+C grade and recommendation for inspection was relatively cautious and responsible.
* Xiaoya's Comment: This app performed moderately well, with decent identification ability for genuine items, but still conservative for fakes.
App 2: 'Pocket Appraiser'
* Operation Experience: In addition to photos, it also required recording a short video to display the jade from multiple angles. It took a bit longer, but was said to obtain more information.
* Hotan Jade Seed Material: The result showed 'Hotan jade, natural seed material, high density, good oiliness'. ✅ It even analyzed the cause of skin color formation, showing improved professionalism. The market price given was also closer to the actual value.
* Emerald A-grade: The result showed 'Natural emerald A-grade, ice-type, positive green, fine texture'. ✅ Also accurate, and mentioned 'no obvious fluorescence reaction', which is an important indicator for judging A-grade goods.
* Quartzite Jade: The result showed 'Quartzite, not natural emerald'. ❌ Wow! It directly named it as quartzite! And detailed the physical property differences between quartzite and emerald (such as refractive index, density, etc.), very professional!
* Xiaoya's Comment: This app's performance really surprised me! Its ability to identify fakes was significantly stronger, and it used professional terminology appropriately and with depth.
App 3: 'AI Jade Appraisal'
* Operation Experience: The interface was cool, claiming to combine spectral analysis technology. After uploading photos, the waiting time was the longest, about 1 minute.
* Hotan Jade Seed Material: The result showed 'Chalcedony, not Hotan jade'. ❌ A huge surprise! It actually identified Hotan jade seed material as chalcedony! This is a world of difference!
* Emerald A-grade: The result showed 'Natural emerald, A-grade'. ✅ Barely passed, but no more detailed description.
* Quartzite Jade: The result showed 'Natural emerald, B-grade'. ❌ Also incorrect, although it identified it as treated, the material judgment was wrong.
* Xiaoya's Comment: This app's appraisal results were very disappointing, especially with a major error in judging Hotan jade. It seems that no matter how cool the technology, the database and algorithm are king.
My Personal Summary and Recommendations:
After this actual test, my feeling is: AI jade appraisal, for now, can only be used as an auxiliary tool and cannot be fully relied upon! They have decent accuracy in identifying some typical, obviously genuine items. But once they encounter high imitations, or situations where jade characteristics are not so obvious, AI's judgment will be greatly reduced, and even serious misjudgments may occur.
Why do AI appraisals 'fail'?
- Data Limitations: Even with massive data, the complexity and diversity of jade are far beyond imagination, and every piece of jade is unique. AI struggles to cover all subtle features.
- Lighting and Angle: The lighting, angle, and background during photography will seriously affect AI's judgment. A blurry or color-shifted photo, no matter how powerful the AI, is powerless.
- Core Identification Points: Many jade identifications require combining touch, sound, and even the 'eyesight' and 'mindset' of experienced appraisers, which AI cannot currently simulate.
Practical Advice for Jade Enthusiasts:
- Beginner Entry: You can use AI Apps for initial understanding, but never as a basis for purchase.
- Important Transactions: Be sure to seek professional authoritative institution appraisal certificates! This is the most guaranteed method.
- Look More, Learn More: Get more exposure to physical objects, communicate more with experienced jade friends, and improve your own discernment.
- Don't Be Greedy: The jade market is deep, and money doesn't grow on trees. Be wary of prices far below market value.
I hope my actual test can bring some inspiration to everyone! The charm of jade lies in its naturalness, rarity, and cultural connotation, and precisely because of this, its appraisal requires even more professional knowledge and experience. Everyone, please keep your eyes open on your jade journey! 👀
