Hello, fellow jade lovers! 👋 I'm your old friend, Old Wang, who has been in the jade circle for over twenty years. Today, I want to talk about a hot topic recently – AI jade appraisal! 🤖 Many friends have asked me if AI appraisal is reliable? Can it replace manual appraisal? Today, I will combine my own experience to give you an in-depth analysis!

🔍 AI Appraisal: Black Tech or a Scam?

First of all, we must admit that AI technology has made amazing progress in many fields, including image recognition, big data analysis, and so on. In the field of jade appraisal, some companies have also launched so-called 'AI appraisal' apps or mini-programs. They usually claim to be able to quickly identify the authenticity, type, color, and even estimate the price of jade by uploading pictures or videos. Sounds very tempting, doesn't it? ✨

My Personal Experience:

Some time ago, I was also curious to try several popular AI appraisal tools on the market. I specifically selected several pieces of jade that I had authoritative certificates for, including an icy-type positive green A-grade bracelet, a B+C grade floating flower pendant, and a natural Hetian jade seed material (to test its ability to identify other types of jade).

  • A-grade Jade Bracelet: I uploaded high-definition pictures from multiple angles. One AI tool gave the result: 'Natural jadeite, icy-type, positive green, market reference price XX million yuan.' This result was basically consistent with my understanding and the certificate, but the price range was quite broad, and it didn't go into professional terms like 'gelatinous feel' or 'fluorescence.'

  • B+C Grade Pendant: This piece had been acid-washed, glued, and dyed. The AI tool gave the result: 'Suspected treated jade, recommended for inspection.' This result was cautious, but it did not directly point out that it was B+C grade, nor did it detail the treatment method.

  • Hetian Jade Seed Material: Interestingly, when I uploaded photos of the Hetian jade seed material, most AI tools directly identified it as 'non-jadeite,' and some even gave the result 'suspected quartzite.' This indicates that current AI still has significant limitations in cross-jade type recognition.

🤔 Advantages and Limitations of AI Appraisal

👍 Advantages:
* Convenience: Anytime, anywhere, just take a picture with your phone to get preliminary results, saving ordinary consumers the trouble of going to an appraisal agency.
* Entry-level Screening: For some obvious fakes (such as glass, plastic imitations), the accuracy of AI recognition is still relatively high, which can help novices quickly rule out low-level fakes.
* Big Data Learning: Theoretically, AI can continuously improve its recognition capabilities by learning from massive appraisal data.

👎 Limitations (which I, as an expert, am most concerned about):
* Dependence on Image Quality: AI recognition highly depends on the clarity, lighting, and angle of the uploaded pictures. A blurry, color-shifted picture will directly affect the accuracy of the recognition result.
* Inability to Access Internal Structure: The type, structure, and flaws of jade often need to be seen under specific light, through a magnifying glass or even a microscope. AI can only judge based on surface features in pictures and cannot delve into the internal structure, which is its major drawback.
* Lack of Experiential Judgment: Jade appraisal is not just a science, but also an art. Old experts, through years of accumulated experience, can judge the 'charm' and 'spirit' of jade from subtle details, which AI currently cannot capture.
* Limited Recognition of Treatment Methods: With the continuous upgrading of counterfeiting technology, some high-imitation B+C grade jade, and even optimized treatments (such as laser drilling, waxing, etc.), have surface features very similar to A-grade jade, making it difficult for AI to accurately distinguish.
* Inability to Issue Authoritative Certificates: The final legally binding document is still a certificate issued by a nationally recognized professional appraisal agency.

💡 My Professional Advice: AI appraisal can only be used as a reference, not a substitute for professional appraisal!

  • Entry-level Screening: If you are a novice and want to initially judge whether a piece of jade is 'obviously fake,' AI can serve as your first line of defense.

  • Auxiliary Tool: Before purchasing, you can try to use AI tools for preliminary judgment, but it should never be used as the final basis for purchase.

  • Ultimately Rely on Professional Institutions: When purchasing high-value jade, be sure to send it to a nationally recognized jewelry and jade appraisal institution (such as NGTC, GIC, etc.) for professional appraisal and obtain an authoritative certificate. This is your greatest guarantee!

  • Learn More, Communicate More: Improving your own appreciation ability is the key! See more genuine items, communicate more with experts, and understand market trends.

To summarize: AI appraisal is like a tool that helps you quickly look up a dictionary; it can give you some basic information, but to write a good article, you ultimately have to rely on your own knowledge and judgment. For natural jadeite, which is complex and varied, human experience and the assistance of professional equipment are still irreplaceable. I hope my sharing helps everyone!
