Hello, sisters! I'm Xiaoya, your jewelry investment advisor. Today, I want to talk about a hot topic: AI jade appraisal! 🤖✨
Recently, I've seen many sisters on Xiaohongshu discussing AI appraisal, with various mini-programs and apps emerging, claiming to identify jade authenticity and assess value in seconds. As someone who has been in this industry for over ten years, I felt a mix of emotions when I heard about these. 🤔
Is AI appraisal really reliable? Here's my personal test!
To provide you with the most authentic and professional experience report, I specifically tested several popular AI appraisal tools on the market. I prepared three pieces of jade:
- A Hetian jade seed material bracelet: Fine texture, excellent oiliness, natural skin color, market value around 50,000 yuan.
- A Russian material jasper bracelet: Rich color, slightly rough structure, market value around 8,000 yuan.
- A high-imitation quartzite jade bracelet: Dyed and treated, looks very similar to jadeite to the naked eye, but is actually B-grade, market value a few hundred yuan.
I used these AI tools to photograph, upload, and appraise them. What were the results?
* Hetian jade seed material bracelet: Most AI tools could identify it as 'Hetian jade,' but the accuracy of describing 'seed material' and 'bracelet' varied. More importantly, AI could hardly provide effective assessments for key value-determining factors like 'oiliness' and 'skin color.' For valuation, some gave 20,000 yuan, others 80,000 yuan, a huge discrepancy with no reference value. ❌
* Russian material jasper bracelet: AI tools generally identified it as 'jasper,' but the success rate for identifying the origin 'Russian material' was not high. The valuation was equally outrageous, ranging from 3,000 yuan to 15,000 yuan. ❌
* High-imitation quartzite jade bracelet: To my surprise, two AI tools actually identified it as 'natural jadeite'! They even gave a valuation of tens of thousands of yuan! If one believed this, they would suffer a huge loss! 😱
Why did AI appraisal 'fail'?
After this test, I deeply realized that current AI appraisal in the jade field is far from 'reliable.' The main reasons are as follows:
- Complexity of jade: Jade appraisal is not just about color and structure; it also involves comprehensive factors like 'kind, water, color, craftsmanship, and shape.' Among these, 'kind and water' require experienced appraisers to observe from various angles, including transmitted light and side light, and even to touch and feel its texture and density. Current AI image recognition technology struggles to capture and analyze these subtle differences.
- Limitations of data training: AI's power lies in its learning ability based on big data. However, the jade market is ever-changing, and each piece of jade is unique. Building a sufficiently large and detailed jade database to train AI is extremely difficult and costly. Many AI tools may only be trained on common categories, and their recognition ability for rare, special, or high-imitation jade is greatly reduced.
- Human intervention and counterfeiting: Jade counterfeiting techniques are constantly evolving, with dyeing, gluing, and optimization treatments emerging endlessly. These treatments often require professional instruments and experience to identify. AI currently cannot penetrate the internal structure of jade, nor can it identify some microscopic features that are difficult to detect with the naked eye.
- Lack of 'emotional' factors: The value of jade, in addition to the material itself, also includes its historical culture, artistic value, rarity, and even the wearer's emotional attachment. These 'emotional' factors are beyond AI's comprehension and evaluation.
My professional advice:
Sisters, I know you all want to quickly and conveniently understand your jade. But for now, AI appraisal can only serve as an initial reference and should never be used as the final basis for identification!
If you truly want to appraise jade or understand its true value, I strongly recommend you to:
* Choose authoritative jewelry appraisal institutions: National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), China University of Geosciences Jewelry Testing Center, etc. They have professional equipment and experienced appraisers, and the certificates they issue have legal effect.
* Seek experienced experts or reputable dealers: They can provide more accurate judgments and advice based on years of experience and professional knowledge.
* Learn more about jade knowledge: Improving your appreciation ability is the best way to protect yourself. Observe, touch, and compare more, and slowly cultivate your 'jade sense.'
To summarize: AI jade appraisal is currently more like a 'toy' that can satisfy curiosity, but never treat it as an 'expert.' In the world of jade, experience, professionalism, and trust are still irreplaceable cornerstones. I hope my sharing helps you avoid the pitfalls of AI appraisal! 💖
