Hey sisters, the topic of AI jade appraisal has been absolutely trending on Xiaohongshu recently! 🔥 As an old expert who has been in the jade circle for over ten years, having personally examined countless real and fake jade pieces, today I'm going to share my thoughts and personal experiences with AI appraisal!
1. What Exactly is AI Appraisal? 🤔
Simply put, AI appraisal uses artificial intelligence technology, through image recognition, big data analysis, and other means, to judge the type, water, color, flaws, authenticity, and other characteristics of jade. Many popular AI appraisal tools on the market claim to achieve accuracy rates of over 90% or even 95%. Sounds tempting, doesn't it? Especially for us newbies, it's practically a godsend!
2. My First AI Appraisal Experience: Surprises and Limitations Coexist! 😲
Some time ago, I specifically found a few popular AI appraisal apps and tested them with some of my jadeite A-goods, B-goods, C-goods, and some high imitations. The results? Well, there were surprises, and there were limitations.
* Surprises: For some B-goods and C-goods with obvious characteristics, such as acid etching patterns, glue injection marks, uneven dyeing, etc., AI's recognition speed and accuracy were indeed very high. It could quickly point out these details that are difficult to detect with the naked eye, and even provide some preliminary valuation ranges. For some beginners, this is undoubtedly an excellent preliminary screening tool, effectively helping to avoid pitfalls.
* Limitations: However, for some high-quality A-grade jadeite, especially those with excellent clarity and rich color, AI's judgment seemed inadequate. For example, I presented an ice-kind, vibrant green cabochon, and the AI's result was 'suspected of optimization treatment,' which made me laugh and cry. You know, this cabochon was a top-grade piece I bought at a high price from an old mine in Myanmar back in the day! Also, some highly imitated B+C goods, after clever treatment, were easily misidentified as A-goods by AI. This indicates that AI currently struggles to capture the 'lively' spirit and natural charm of jade, let alone understand its historical and cultural value and market scarcity.
3. Can AI Appraisal Replace Human Appraisal? My Answer is: NO! 🙅♀️
Why do I say that?
* Accumulation of Experience: Human appraisal, especially by experienced experts, relies not only on instruments and the naked eye but more importantly on decades of accumulated experience. We can determine the origin and mining age of jade from subtle details like its 'skin,' 'mist layer,' 'cotton flaws,' and 'fly-wings,' and even predict its future value trends. These are things that AI currently cannot learn and replicate.
* Perception of 'Charm': Jade, especially jadeite, emphasizes 'charm.' A good piece of jadeite is not just about perfect physical attributes but also a visual and spiritual enjoyment. This 'charm' is abstract and emotional, and no matter how powerful AI is, it cannot perceive and understand it like a human.
* Market Complexity: The jade market is constantly changing, and prices are affected by various factors, including origin, craftsmanship, cultural background, market supply and demand, and so on. While AI can analyze big data, its judgment on rapidly changing market sentiment and consumer preferences is still limited.
* Authority of Certificates: Currently, appraisal certificates issued by nationally recognized authoritative appraisal institutions (such as GIA, NGTC, CGL, etc.) remain the most powerful proof of jade's authenticity and quality. AI appraisal results currently cannot obtain the same legal validity.
4. The Future of AI Appraisal and Our Strategy 💡
Although AI appraisal cannot completely replace human appraisal yet, I believe it will become increasingly powerful in the future. It will become a powerful auxiliary tool for us jade enthusiasts and practitioners.
* Beginner Entry: For beginners, AI appraisal can serve as a preliminary screening tool to help identify some obvious fakes, lowering the entry barrier.
* Auxiliary Tool: For experts, AI can serve as an auxiliary tool to improve efficiency, especially when dealing with a large number of samples. However, the final judgment still needs to combine human experience.
* Learning and Improvement: We can use AI appraisal tools to learn in reverse, understand the characteristics of fakes, and improve our own identification abilities.
My Little Tips:
- Don't blindly trust AI: AI is just a tool; the final judgment still depends on your own knowledge and experience, or seeking help from professionals.
- Look, learn, and handle more: There are no shortcuts to improving identification skills. Go to physical stores to see real objects, communicate more with experts, and handle more pieces to truly develop 'sharp eyes.'
- Authoritative certificates are a guarantee: When purchasing valuable jade, be sure to ask for and verify certificates issued by authoritative appraisal institutions.
Sisters, the world of jade is vast and profound. The emergence of AI is a testament to technological progress, but it can never replace human perception of beauty and the accumulation of experience. I hope today's sharing can help everyone view AI appraisal more rationally, and I wish you all can find your beloved jade! 💖
