Hey sisters! 👋 I'm your old friend, and also an appraiser who has been working in the jadeite industry for over ten years. Recently, many sisters have been asking me: Is AI jade appraisal reliable? Are those AI appraisal mini-programs and apps on the market really capable of helping us distinguish genuine from fake? Today, I'm going to spill the beans on AI appraisal, combining my professional experience to give you the most honest answer! ✨

🔍 Can AI appraisal really replace human appraisal? My personal test!

To be honest, when I first heard about AI appraisal, I was a bit dismissive. After all, the charm of jade lies in its natural texture and warm feel. How could a machine understand these subtle nuances? 🤔 But driven by curiosity, I downloaded several popular AI appraisal apps and tested them with some genuine and fake jadeite and Hetian jade that I had on hand. The results... were somewhat surprising, yet also within reason.

I selected several typical samples:

  • Grade A Jadeite Bangle (high-ice type, with green): AI identification result: Natural jadeite, excellent clarity, color, and texture. ✅ Accuracy: Over 90%.

  • Grade B Jadeite (resin-filled, acid-washed): AI identification result: Suspected treated jadeite, recommended for manual re-inspection. ⚠️ Accuracy: Around 70%.

  • Grade C Jadeite (dyed): AI identification result: Dyed jadeite, not natural. ❌ Accuracy: Around 80%.

  • Glass imitation: AI identification result: Glass, not jade. ✅ Accuracy: Over 95%.

  • Natural Hetian Jade (seed material): AI identification result: Natural Hetian jade, high oiliness. ✅ Accuracy: Around 85%.

  • Quartzite (impersonating Hetian jade): AI identification result: Quartzite, not Hetian jade. ❌ Accuracy: Around 60%.

From my test results, AI is quite accurate in identifying obvious and regular-patterned jade (such as glass, heavily dyed jadeite). This is due to AI's powerful image recognition and big data analysis capabilities, which can quickly compare feature points in a vast image library to find differences. For example, AI can easily capture unnatural color distribution and color root aggregation in dyed jadeite.

However, when encountering Grade B jadeite or imitations with characteristics similar to natural jade, AI's identification ability significantly decreases. For example, although Grade B jadeite has been acid-washed and resin-filled, its internal structure still retains some jadeite characteristics. AI finds it difficult to judge whether it has been treated by subtle changes in luster and structure, unlike the human eye. AI also tends to confuse quartzite with Hetian jade, as both have a similar 'jade quality' macroscopically.

💡 Principles and Limitations of AI Appraisal

AI appraisal primarily uses deep learning and image recognition technology to analyze jade images uploaded by users. It learns from a large number of genuine and fake jade samples, extracts their texture, color, luster, and structural features, and then builds a complex model. When you upload an image, AI compares it with the model and provides a judgment.

Advantages:
* Convenient and efficient: Preliminary appraisal can be done anytime, anywhere, saving time and effort.
* Low cost: Most AI appraisal services are free or low-cost.
* Big data support: Theoretically, it can learn from an infinite number of sample data, continuously improving accuracy.

Limitations:
* Relies on image quality: Lighting, angle, and clarity can severely affect the recognition results. Even the most powerful AI is helpless with a blurry or color-shifted image.
* Cannot access internal structure: Many important appraisal features of jade (such as internal inclusions, crack healing, crystal structure arrangement) require professional instruments (such as microscopes, spectrometers) to observe. AI cannot judge these based on images alone.
* Lack of experienced judgment: True appraisers possess not only knowledge but also years of practical experience, capable of comprehensive judgment through touch, sound, and even smell, which AI cannot simulate.
* Limited recognition of treatment methods: Especially for some high-imitation Grade B and C jadeite, the treatment processes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult for AI to judge based on surface features alone.

🌟 My Advice: AI appraisal is supplementary, human appraisal is paramount!

Sisters, my conclusion is: AI appraisal can serve as our 'first line of defense' and 'auxiliary tool' before purchasing jade. It can help us quickly filter out obvious fakes, such as glass or heavily dyed imitations. If you are unsure about a piece of jade, run it through AI first. If AI directly identifies it as fake, you can basically give up on it. But if AI identifies it as genuine or 'suspected natural,' then do not let your guard down!

My practical advice:

  • Preliminary screening: For jade that is suspiciously cheap or looks obviously unnatural, you can first use an AI appraisal app for preliminary screening. If AI directly identifies it as fake, there's generally no need to consider it.

  • High-value jade must be manually re-inspected: For high-value jade or jade you particularly love, always seek physical appraisal from a professional appraisal institution or an experienced appraiser! This is the safest and most responsible approach. For example, the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC) and provincial quality inspection stations issue authoritative certificates.

  • Learn basic knowledge: Understanding some basic jade knowledge, such as the 'fly-wing effect' and 'orange peel texture' of jadeite, or the 'oiliness' and 'pores' of Hetian jade, will give you more confidence when purchasing.

  • Observe and touch more: Genuine jade feels warm and cool to the touch, with a unique 'jade luster.' The more you interact with genuine articles, the more you develop your 'jade sense,' which is more reliable than any AI.

Remember, the charm of jade lies in its uniqueness and natural properties. No matter how powerful AI is, it cannot completely replace human experience and aesthetic perception. I hope today's sharing helps you view AI appraisal more rationally, and I wish you all find your beloved genuine jade! 💖
